ABC News Wed, 12 Jan 2000 7:34 CDT LOCAL NEWS : South Australia Progress achieved in dispute over genocide claim The Aboriginal Lands Trust has applauded the operators of the Olympic Dam uranium mine, after talks yesterday between mining company WMC and representatives of the Arabunna community. The meeting follows weeks of protesting by a group led by Arabunna member Kevin Buzzacott, who has accused WMC of acts of genocide. WMC spokesman, Richard Yeeles. says the meeting was frank and cordial. Aboriginal Lands Trust executive officer, Chris Larkin, says the discussions are very significant. "It's important that people be given time to sit down and talk and listen to each other's views and get over the argument stage and get on with working it out." "I think that's where - to Richard Yeeles' credit - he acknowledges there are things we're not going to ever agree on." "But if we don't talk about them, we won't even discover the things that we actually have in common and the things we all want to achieve together." It's expected members of the Arabunna community will hold another meeting in about six weeks to pin-point issues of concern and to decide who will speak on their behalf.
