Statement for the Journey of Healing 2000

On 26 May 2000, the second anniversary of Sorry Day, all Australians are
urged to participate in the Journey of Healing focused on bringing home the
stolen generations...
On 26 May, 1997, a report tabled in Federal Parliament shook Australia.
Bringing Them Home detailed painful evidence of the removal of thousands of
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children from their families. It
recommended that a 'Sorry Day be held. A year later over half a million
people responded, signing Sorry Books and taking part in ceremonies on Sorry
Day. In May 1999, this people's movement launched a 'Journey of Healing'.

JOURNEY OF HEALING 2000 will:
* Call for the wholehearted implementation of Bringing Them Home's
recommendations
Only one-third of the report's 54 recommendations have been implemented,
many of those only partially. This half-hearted response has prompted some
of the stolen generations to seek recognition and redress through the
courts where they have found themselves opposed by Government lawyers. Our
Governments need to agree that people who have been so gravely disadvantaged
have a right to reparations, and work out with them how this can best be
done.
