ABC News Fri, 28 Apr 2000 6:21 AEST Indigenous body claims political motives cut funding An Aboriginal and Islander representative body claims its funding has been cut for political motives. The Foundation for Aboriginal And Islander Research Action (FAIRA), says it has been representing indigenous people for the past 22 years. It says the Federal Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, John Herron, made the decision to cut funding after being advised by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC). Acting general manager Charmaine Carroll says the decision came as a shock, and FAIRA has until June 30 before its recognition ceases. "We've had no problem with audits, and now suddenly were not going to be a rep body anymore and we consider it's because of our political activities," she said.
