11.33am (AEST) THE Governor-General must accept the
document of reconciliation on behalf of the nation rather than the
Prime Minister, Australian Democrats Senator Aden Ridgeway said
  today.

Senator Ridgeway, the Democrats spokesman on reconciliation
and a member of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, said the
government should abide by the council's decision to present the
  document to Sir William Deane.

"The choice has to come down to the Governor-General," Senator
Ridgeway, the only Aborigine in Federal Parliament, told radio 2UE.

"What the Prime Minister (John Howard) and the government need
to understand is the issues are part of ceremony and a symbolic
act in terms of the governor-general taking receipt of the
document for reconciliation on behalf of the people."

Mr Howard said the question of who received the council's
document at Corroboree 2000 next month was premature.

Sir William said he was seeking guidance from the government on
his role in the May 27 ceremony.
