ABC News Fri, 28 Jul 2000 19:35 AEST INDIGENOUS NEWS Judge to listen to 'secret women's business' A Federal Court judge has ruled all men, other than himself, will be barred from the room while an anthropologist is cross-examined over so-called "secret women's business" in the Hindmarsh Island bridge case. Anthropologist Dr Deanne Fergie and a number of others, including a former federal aboriginal affairs minister Robert Tickner, had sought a ruling from Justice von Doussa that the controversial evidence was not required. However, the judge has stated he will listen to an examination of the sensitive material contained in two envelopes. The secret women's business lead to a temporary ban on construction of the bridge in 1994, on the basis that the site was of cultural significance to Aboriginal women.
