I was re-reading Colin Tatz's excellent "Obstacle Race" tonight, about
Aborigines in sport, and the following leapt out at me from page 92:
"the legendary Bobby McDonald probably came from either Bourke in New
South
Wales or Nathalia in Victoria. He was the creator of the 'crouch start'
in
1887 - many years before either Lewis Hope or Harry Bushell were
(wrongly)
believed to have invented it. At first his opponents objected to this
'unfair' start and it was banned, but McDonal was allowed to return to
it."
Wow!
How would the image of either track or some Field event be today without
the invention of an Australian First Nation individual?
And all we can do is forget or ignore this, not only improvement to
Track &
Field, but it iconography of the inventiveness and athlecicism of the
First
Peoples of this continent.
