Vale Charles Perkins
Charles Perkins was once playing with his grandkids down in kiddies'
corner at North Bondi. Looking at him with the kind of curiosity
that you do when you think you recognise someone famous, he looked back
at me. Without hesitation, he shot me a beaming smile. At
that moment, I realised that, despite his radicalism for the Aboriginal
cause, he didn't necessarily hate big boofy white blokes like me.
He has my respect, not only for what he stood for but for who he was as
a person.
Steve Apps, Bondi, October 18.
Goodbye, Uncle. You were the first, and an inspiration to me and many
like me who overcame poverty and discrimination to go to
university. There will be many more blackfellas who will succeed in the
future because you did it.
Your memory will live on.
Kevin Williams, Balmain, October 18.
Vale deceased warrior. Enjoy your Dreaming. You deserve it.
Paul Melling, Scullin (ACT), October 18.
