Nothing much changes. People are naive to think it doesn't happen. My cousin
(who is fair like me!) was picked up last year and cross questioned by police
demanding to know where he was going and how was he getting there. They even
asked him how much money he had. When he replied he was going to check out the
local Aboriginal Co-op. they demanded to know why he would want to go there.
When he told them he was Palawa (Tassie blackfella), they demanded he empty his
pockets. They wanted to know why he had $100. and where he'd got it from. My
cousin isnt that old and it was his money but they insisted on taking him down
to the local copshop and kept him there for3 hours. With no reason.
Why would young Koories want to join the police services when many of them have
already experienced the racist attitudes of other coppers? And its often done in
a way so subtle and so experienced that when you try and make a complaint,
you're laughed at. Superior officers and people who train our recruits need to
get rid of their crappy attitudes otherwise we've got no hope of things
changing. And no hope of preventing more of our young men dying in prison.
Peter, I agree that the amount of racist crap has increased since Cathy won her
race. I've had so many jokes etc passed onto me and I'm supposed to laugh???
People get shirty when you tell that its not funny. One of our Murri students
here had to endure listening to a fellow student go on and on about how "boongs"
and "coons:" get everything and they even get their own "boong" (that'd be me!)
to help at Uni.
Sometimes I think we havent gone far at all.
