Exactly. There must be a way to get data from the database but I doubt
that Hibernate is an easy enough way for application where you need,
say, just one table for authentication.

But this socket solution is not that easy to implement... maybe it's
even easier to wait for ActiveRecordJDBC matures... For case of php,
look out for JSR223 (Java Scripting API), there's some php stuff.
