2)       Thanks for the responses.  I have tried a few, but I am still getting 
the build.compiler error.  What should I put in for that variable?

Isn´t the latest version´s build.xml corrupted/wrong? I´m almost sure I read 
people talking this week about this problem...
Myself I had this problem also and fixed it by editing the Ant build.xml and 
defining those undefined vars in the beginning ( java.target_version and 
build.compiler).
Another fix I remember reading was to download the build.xml from an older 
version, that it should be OK also.

1st note: are you sure you use JDK and not JRE which is just a VM plus 
core utils?
