In the image element, you can set a default image to use until actual content is inserted. Almost every element lets you do this.
Either create a blank gif (a 1px one to keep file size to an absolute minimum or one that is sized to the dimensions your author picture will be if your page layout depends on having the image sized right) or create some kind of generic picture like a gray shadow head or something and upload it to your asset manager then use that as the default. When the page publishes, it will use the default image and then you're free to insert the real image later on without having to actually replace any images.
