Our workaround is to create a copy of the image using the "Extended Image Editing Options" in the Asset Manager, and where it asks "Replace original file/Create new file" choose the latter.
However we uncovered a bug in the version of CMS we were using at the time (7.5.1.xx). Strange things happened to the new file if you just chose Create new file and clicked OK. To workaround this bug we had to do at least one operation on the image (so something like "Flip horizontally" twice should do the trick). This doesn't solve the problem of what to do with the old file or all the references to it. You'd have to do something like "Show Usage" on the old image if you wanted to replace all references to the old file with references to the new file. Or you might be able to use "Find and Replace" from the Project node to replace those occurrences which appear in Text placeholders (I don't think this would find occurrences in Image placeholders though).
