Yeah, the default text editor produces horribly invalid code, unfortunately.
There are two options, neither of which I've personally followed up on:

1. Replace the standard text editor. Apparently, you can 'plug in' an
alternative text editor, but only certain editors are supported.

2. Use tidy. As a bit of a hack, you can run tidy on content. The problem, I
believe, is that it occurs during publication, so you still can't work with
valid code in the default text editor this way.

Or you could just do away with XHTML. HTML 4 is, for all practical purposes,
just as good (and, in some ways, better) although that's not to say that the
text editor will produce valid HTML either, sadly. But it gets a bit closer.
