Artesia is an enterprise-grade asset management repository, containing
functionality far in advance of the capabilities of the built-in CMS
Asset Manager. That said, generally few organisations will require
the power of an enterprise-class asset management system and not
already have one. So the likelihood is that you would not implement
Artesia (or Cumulus for that matter) as part of a CMS project, but
rather as a project unto itself. Mostly these systems are used by
media-heavy or marketing-heavy organisations (newspapers, TV stations,
magazines, industry bodies, etc).

We have just deployed with Canto Cumulus and have found a few areas of
the integration a bit lacking. Having done it I would offer the
following advice:

1) CSS supporting images (buttons, backgrounds, borders, shading,
icons, etc) should stay in the CMS Asset Manager for speed, only
corporate image and video assets should go in the DAM
2) Not all DAM tools integrate smoothly with CMS as they rely on an
integration component to be plugged into the CMS called an "External
Folder" and these are of varying quality
3) Don't assume that because you can implement a CMS, you can also
implement DAM - like all things the quality of the implementation
depends on the skills of the solution designer, so *when* you get it
wrong (and you will) it will come back to hurt you; get help from
people who do it for a living and know the technology in question

PS. DAM = Digital Asset Management

HTH.
