>From my experiences watching customer upgrades. I like the ability to do it 
on new hardware and have longer test window. If you have no or limited 
customizations given its 10.1.2 you are ok to do in place upgrade on your 
version without intermediate upgrades. If you want to validate your steps 
you could Amazon AWS Medium/Large Server for <1 month setup with Oracle and 
CMS on temporary keys to practice the upgrade procedure. Make sure you have 
proper OS and DB backups if you are doing this in place.
