I'm new to Linux and have a new RH 5.1 installation on an Intel machine.
I'm having difficulty getting my ESS1868 soundcard working. I have not
re-built the kernel for sound support, but for some reason, I thought
that soundcard kernel was built during my installation. After checking,
the support seems to be there. I also got another person's
/etc/isapna.conf who has the 1868. Here is the information I have:

The output of "cat /proc/interrupts":

> 0: 1088645 timer
> 1: 3222 keyboard
> 2: 0 cascade
> 3: 23826 + serial
> 4: 15589 + serial
> 5: 2 sound blaster
> 8: 1 + rtc
> 13: 1 math error
> 14: 9980 + ide0

Here is the output of "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf":

> Board 1 has Identity 27 ff ff ff ff 68 18 73 16: ESS1868 Serial No 4294967295
>[checksum 27]

I looked at the Sound-HOWTO again and did "cat /dev/sndstat":

> Sound Driver:3.5.4-960630
> Kernel: Linux dexter 2.0.34 #1 Fri May 8 16:05:57 EDT 1998 i586
> Config options: 0
>
> Installed drivers:
>
> Card config:
>
> Audio devices:
> 0: ESS ES1688 AudioDrive (rev 11)
>
> Synth devices:
> 0: Yamaha OPL-3
>
> Midi devices:
>
> Timers:
> 0: System clock
>
> Mixers:
> 0: Sound Blaster

When I do a "cat train.au > /dev/audio", I hear a click on my speakers,
then a constant annoying tone which does not stop until I re-boot.

BUT... when I dump the start up log with "dmesg" I see:

> Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996
> Sound: Fatal error. Audio interrupt after freeing buffers.

So there is something at boot time that is failing. Can anyone help me
out?
