I'm not too sure where they came up with 576?  It seems more logical to me
to use something like 512 + 40 (packet header) = 552.  

My experience has been that the only time it pays to use anything other
than 1500 is if you are ftp'ing AND (a) telneting or (b) ircing or (c) 
insert other small packet process here.  And then it only seems to help if
you go all the way down to something like 256 + 40 = 296 which By the way
only decreased ftp performance by about 10-12%.  I thought that say 552,
some where in the middle, would give me the best of both worlds but it
didn't seem much different than 1500. 

The experience I refer to was over a modem link of course.  I've never
done any experimenting with MTU on networked machines.
