Hi all,
I'm thinking of upgrading my 4.2 system that has worked flawlessly
since I installed it last summer to 5.1.
When I originally installed 4.1 I just made two partitions for Linux -
for for / and one for swap. I also have two other partitions a FAT32
partition for that other OS that I use only when I absolutely have to
and a small 60MB DOS partition so I can copy thing back and forth
between that other OS and Linux through it. I upgraded from 4.1 to
4.2 within a few weeks so I wasn't too concerned if I lost everything,
but now I've modified lots of things and don't want to loose those
changes. If I knew then what I know now I would have added one more
partition for /usr/local and /home so I wouldn't have to worry about
this.
What directories does the install program modify?
I have a number of programs I've installed myself from .tar.gz files
in /usr/local (e.g., Mesa, gtk-1.0.4, gimp-1.0, ezppp, xmftp,
netscape3.0, etc.) Will the files in /usr/local still be there after
the upgrade and will those programs still work? Some of them are
statically linked so that should be no problem but some of them are
dynamically linked against libc5, but I believe libc5 is in 5.1 in
some other directory and all I might have to do is modify the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH - correct?
I believe 5.1 now uses gtk but doesn't use gtk-1.0.4 - can I install
gtk-1.0.4 w/o breaking any of the RedHat programs? I guess I could
just put 1.0.4 in /usr/local and then change the LD_LIBRARY_PATH
depending on which program I ran, but I'd rather not have to worry
about setting the LD_LIBRARY_PATH depending on the program I'm going
to execute.
I teach at a university that has Sun's running Solaris 2.6 so I need
the programs I write at one place to run on the other without any
modification (so far so good with RH 4.2). Does anyone know if the
new glibc will cause me any problems with this?
If I understand correctly, the 5.1 comes with version 2.7.x of gcc/g++
and with egcs (so something like that). The university still uses
gcc/g++ 2.7.x but may upgrade to 2.8.x sometime this summer. Most of
our courses use C++ so will I run into problems with egcs vs. g++
minor differences?
Anything else I should watch out for while upgrading?
Thanks in advance,
Dave
