They should be. Redhat doesn't touch stuff in /usr/local. On the other
hand, you may want to recompile (if possible) those applications to
take advantage of new libraries, esp., the libc5 vs. glibc issue. While
Redhat will still run the libc5 binaries you have, it won't be as
efficient as if they were linked against glibc.

I don't *think* you have to modify the LD_LIBRARY_PATH (I only
have used it for apps like StarOffice which need a particular rev of
libc, which is stashed out of the way of other lib directories). You may
need to edit the ld.so.conf file and rerun ldconfig.

You'd probably want to check the dependencies of this one. I'm not
that up on gtk.

to the differences, although some things will require recompilation due
to library differences. One prog that I had here that got broken when
I upgraded tto egcs was xosview -- I had to get the sources and
recompile, since it was dependent on a 2.7.x version of libstdc++, and I
had 2.8.0.
