Well, to my experience, if X decides to just draw funny things on the
sreen (like jagged blue lines) and won't respond to ctrl-alt-bksp your
system got killed, but you could check
this out by telnetting to your machine from another box if available, but
usually you will only get 'trying 123.123.123.123' and then there is no
way around rebooting.
