I had similar problems on an HP KAYAK which comes with a
PCnet/PCI II 79C971A.
I had no problems with it in RH 5.0, but in RH 5.1 the card was
not recognized.
I tried both install AND upgrade from 5.0 (yes, I re-installed
5.0 for this :), but it didn't work.
Apparently, the module didn't make it in 5.1.
I had to manually get the .c file, add it to the net directory,
rebuild, etc. Now it's OK.

But on my home computer I do have a 3Com 3c905 Boomerang
100baseTx.
I didn't try the upgrade, but the install went smooth, the card
being auto-detected OK:

3c59x.c:v0.99 4/7/98 Donald Becker
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html
loading device 'eth0'...
eth0: 3Com 3c905 Boomerang 100baseTx at 0xd400,
00:60:97:80:c0:51, IRQ 9
  8K word-wide RAM 3:5 Rx:Tx split, autoselect/MII interface.
MII transceiver found at address 24, status 7869.
Enabling bus-master transmits and whole-frame receives.

I would check first if 3c59x.o is in the
/lib/modules/2.0.34-0.6/net, and if it's loadable (insmod).
Then I would check the /etc/conf.modules for the "alias eth0
3c59x" line.
As a last resort, you could try to install instead of upgrade,
but wait for some other opinions first!

Not quite sure, but I think I saw something about a modified
kernel or module numbering scheme in RH at some point.
