I'm sorry but I disagree with you on this.
Most of the hardware out there is not inherently supported -out of the box-
and needs a kernel compiled in order to use it. Or to use it properly.
Modules can sometimes fail on some devices, to detect where it's resources
really are. Try using a module on an ISA Ne2000 card and you'll see what I
mean.

I had told him in my last message to read the IP-Masq howto, which is where
he could found the answer to his question "What do these settings do
specifically?". Don't get me wrong, I had no problem helping him with it
further (obviously), but he really should have gone and read it.
As for giving him all that info on howto recompile a kernel, that was to
give a good idea on how it is done. But, it would have I'm sure taken me
hours to go through and explain every little detail on each move I made.
There is no point in that when the documentation explains it.

Again I disagree. Unless you can tell me howto setup ip masquerading
without recompiling a kernel?
