Just some ideas; I haven't tried to compile and install sendmail-8.90 nor
fetchmail-4.4.9 ...

How about downloading the sendmail rpm from ftp.redhat.com at

pub/contrib/grouped/glibc/i386/Networking/Daemons/sendmail-8.9.0-1.i386.rpm  

Otherwise, you may wish to telnet localhost at port 25 or do a ps to ensure that
sendmail is running, and to check that the sendmail binary is located where
fetchmail expected it to be. On a normal RH 5 system, it's located at /usr/sbin
with a link from /usr/lib/sendmail.
