This seems like a pretty good idea to me.
I guess someone could create a "server" version of Linux and a
"workstation" version. In both cases it would be nice to have all of the
same tools available - in other words all of the same software would be
available for each distribution, but the default set of installed items
would be different.
The workstation version could have many of the items you suggested
installed automatically.
The server version might automatically install many of the more useful
network management utilities.
This could probably be implemented with one version of Linux. Essentially,
all that is required is a new installation utility - when installing Linux,
the user could be given the following menu at the outset:
"1) Install as a home workstation"
"2) Install as a networked business workstation"
"3) Install as a LAN server"
"4) Install as an Internet server"
and so-on and so forth
After choosing the initial install type, the utility would suggest
partition sizes and would then install a default set of programs based on
the installation type. The user should, of course, have the abilty to
specify additional programs to install during the installation process.
At any rate, this seems like a pretty good idea to me. We'll see what
happens!
