Saturday I hosed my entire system to reapply RH5.1 (I had a 5.0 -> 5.1
upgrade before.) One of the things I hoped to do was to get SMB
working. It worked for a while but now it's dead.

When it was first installed, smbd and nmbd worked just fine. They came
up with all the processes on bootup. I turned the computer on this
morning and smbd just sat there. Eventually the login prompt came up
after 5 minutes or so but smbd and nmbd didn't run. I tried running
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start and checked the status and it said services
weren't running.

Is this a problem with running SMB on a home system with no nic? Or is
there another problem with SMB to cause this to happen?
