I'm a bit in the same situation as you. I downloaded some of the Redhat
5 software, enough to get a base installation. I downloaded the images
for the bootdisk and supplemental disks and the RAWRITE application. I
have two computers (my wife's and mine) which are 486sx. On my wife's
computer is Windows 3.1 which has Qmodem on it I log to Redhat's web
site, download tbe Redhat 5 files and transfer them by diskettes to my
computer. Some files, I'm sure you have noticed, are too big to fit on a
1.44 Mb diskette so I back them up with Msbackup that came with Windows
3.1. I found an application on Redhat 5 which could enable me to do the
same (split files) which is appropriately called "split" , which, I hope
to find how to use it (or other Linux applications to put it back
together in my Linux computer, so I can get rid of Dos, because the space
on my hard drive is very limited (163 Mb). I hope to be able to use
e2compr with "alien" to convert it to RPM format if I can't find it under
RPM. I restore the Redhat 5 files again with the Restore feature of
Msbackup on my (to be) Linux computer to a Dos partition that I use to
hold the Redhat 5 base installation files. Look in the "comps" file in
the base 386 directory, it will show the minimum number and which files
are necessary for a certain purpose, print server, web server, X windos,
etc. to mount the dos partition, try using "/\" as a mounting point, it
allows me to continue the installation, although I haven't been
successful at mounting the dos partition with "mount" after booting after
installation. For some reason, at rebooting, VFS says that my system is
mounted readonly. Someone told me to use the command "mount -n -o
remount,rw / " so I could mount it again read/write. I had partial
success, sure I can edit files, but I can't execute files, it keeps
telling me "command not found" although I can find directories on my hard
drive with the names of the applications that I installed. I guess you
wonder why I go through all this pain transferring files from computers,
I consider a bit of a challenge, trying to find a common reference point
between computers. It's bit frustrating but fortunately, I get
assistance from the Internet. I have a PNP modem on my computer which
doesn't have a PNP bios so my computer so it's not configured correctly
at bootup. I expect the Red Hat 5 isapnptools application to correct
that situation when my Red Hat base system is set up correctly so I can
run applications normally. When that happens, I should be able to
download Red Hat directly to my computer without help from my wife's
computer. From then on I expect to be able to set it up as a X-based web
server.
