 Generated using what? PHP? PHP is considered to be beta on apache 2. Apache 2 
itself should actually be performing better, assuming it is configured 
properly. The loss in performance you mention is significant (but how did you 
come to these numbers? Testing from a remote machine, or using the browser on 
the local machine (it might be you are testing the wrong item here)?). But 
maybe you should go back to apache 1.

 To increase performance run in run level 3, not 5, check if unnecessary 
services are running etc. Check the system configuration in general as well. 
Maybe the upgrade reset some of your tunings.
