Thank You Joseph!  I got the source and Redhat 5.0 patch from:

I applied the 5.0 patch and netatalk compiled fine.  

I've got two afpd daemons, one compiled with -DSHADOWPW and one
without.  Still I can only log in as a "guest user" no matter which afpd
deamon I run.  But, the good news is that it works! Just the files are
owned by 'nobody' of course.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to make my RH 5.0 system _use_ shadow
passwords.  It'll probably break samba if I do. 

Anyways, thanks for your help greatly.  You've got me much further.
