I've been seeing a kind of weird problem with a new RH5 server that I
recently built. It's using a fairly large passwd file (close to 11,000
lines), and when I put that file in place things really slow down on the
box. Logins take up to several seconds when the server is basically idle,
and it seems like disk access in general slows way down.
I thought this might be due to a change in the default users in the
password file, permissions, etc., but I see the same thing when I cat the
users with UIDs of 500+ onto the end of the default RH5 passwd file.
Has anyone else seen problems with large password files on RH5? I think
this may be connected to some other issue (like a weird user entry or
dupes), but it worked fine with RH4.1 and RH4.2. I don't have the problem
at all until I put the extra users into place, and I've been able to
duplicate the issue on another RH5 machine. I am using shadow. I believe
that I have all the updates in place, at least the ones that were out by
Friday of last week...
