Ok cheapest. =) It shouldn't be too hard to find a Boca BB2016 16 port
serial board. There is a mini howto to set it up, and they are cheap. That
is what we are using, and they work great. Though they don't support 56K.
Perfect for your needs.
I believe the quake server has a chat program built in? Unless that's not
what you meant. In that case just goto ftp://ftp.effnet.org and grab an irc
daemon, and set it up. There is aswell a built in chat in linux that you
can access by typing 'mesg y' then aslong as the other online user has done
the same, 'talk otherusername'
