Had a similar incident here a couple of months back. I saw no real clue as
to why it was happening...it appeared like the cdrom would 'hiccup' and
the whole show would stop, as you point out, not consistantly in the same
spot. Here's the steps I took to overcome the trouble;
Check CPU fan! PR150+'s are getting long in the tooth. I've seen cheap
fans 'bind' or in some other way fail, causing them to run underspeed.
This trouble may not be immediately apparent...it is when you see how a
new one runs in comparison :) [most of the are only cheap rubbish anyhow]
Check and clean (if necessary) simm contacts & cacheram stick contacts. In
the latter case here, my cacheram contacts were filthy (oxidization). Be
aware you need sortta know what you're doing here, and need observe ESD
precautions.
Next...clock the thing down if you can with board jumpers. I took the one
here down to 120Mhz..the install completed successfully after this tweek.
CARUMBA! The gcc compiler I got on my rhl-5.o boxset cdrom, ensured I
could only contemplate chapter6 in the install manual. It wouldn't do
anything but sig_11 on the cyrix-150. My immediate work-around this
gliche, was to drop back to gcc-2.7.2.3-6 (gcc-2.7.2.3-8 was on the
cdrom), though subsequently, the cyrix_specific gcc-2.7.2.3-9 rpm has
become available and this too works...so might as well head straight to
that now.
>Then< you can finally compile a kernel for the thing, boot it, check it,
and all should be fine. Anything that core_dumps for inexplicable reasons,
and then caveat to having already installed the upgrade rpms, I find will
behave itself after you reinstall using SRPM instead.
Somewhere along this path, with known functioning kernel/software, you can
try taking the thing back up to speed (<-haha) and, if this holds true for
you, the thing will hang on. This worked for me..your only other recourse,
is to install a different CPU...or consider also, some other part of the
hardware is failing.
Cheers!
Db
..oh, ps: if you want to forward myself the bios number of the boardROM,
I'd be much appreciative for the input on my db of weird&wonderful hw.
