I had a BocaBurger modem... I mean a Boca 56 voicemodem which, after many hours of
frustration, I discovered was on the list of incompatible hardware on RedHat's site.
The text was .

7.2 Incompatible Modems

The following modems are not compatible with Red Hat Linux:

      Plug-and-Play (PnP) modems
Modems that require software drivers for compression, error correction,
high-speed
      operation, etc. Examples are:
            The Multiwave Innovation CommWave V.34
            US Robotics WinModem series
US Robotics Sportster Voice/Fax modem (X2 model 1785 internal PnP)
            Boca modem (model M336l)
Boca Research 28.8 internal modem (model MV34AI)
Zoltrix 33.6 Win HSP Voice/Speaker Phone modem
            Motorola ModemSURFR internal 56K
            DSVD modem
            Compaq 192 PCMCIA modem/serial card
            New Media Winsurfer PCMCIA modem/s

Not very helpful when you've already lost the worth of one modem.

So I went to Deja News and did a search for "Linux & modem that works"
I found about 4 messages of people writing in the linux conferences saying something
to the effect of "I bought a <blarg> modem and it works without a hitch"

I wrote them all down, then went to Best Buy.

The only one on the list that was available at best Buy was the Hayes Accura dual
standard v.90 + k56flex modem.

It was expensive, but I had to have it.

I haven't had a problem since. The PPP script worked the first time. Haven't a
complaint since.
