Any modem that REQUIRES software to make it work: If its called a
Winmodem think of it as a LOSEmodem, or if it says it's especially for
or requires Windoze, give it a wide berth. Also, there is a somewhat
older family of modems based on the "RPI" chipset from Rockwell. These
are tricky because they almost work without the special drivers, they
work well enough to trick you into thinking they're going to actually be
useful, but they're not. Again, they've moved the error correction
protocol out of the hardware and put it into a Windows driver. You'll be
able to dial a number and have it sorta work, but every once in a while
it'll produce a burst of trash, or it'll dial and connect then fail, or
similar.
Your best bet is to find a modem that tells you how to set it up for
DOS. If you must get an internal modem make sure you can DISABLE by
hardware settings (switches or jumpers) the Plug 'n Pray nonsense.
Even better is an external modem. As far as I know they've not yet (!)
produced a LoseModem that's not internal, so you should be safe.
