Have been trying to install RH 5.0 on a Dell file server. Everything
installs dandy, except it will not recognize the 3Com ethernet adapter.
I have tried things like installing two separate but identical machines,
adding a PCI 3Com card (giving it two ethernet adapters), installing a
version of 5.0 cut in 12/97 and one cut in 1/98, all kinds of
variations. The odd thing is I can install on the boot disk and then I
tell it I want a NFS installation and the supplemental disk finds the
3com ethernet adapter just fine. . . but after I compile the kernel,
nothing.
It is a 3com 3c509 internal, and also a PCI based 3com 3c509. An odder
thing is I had an earlier version of RedHat (4.1 or 4.2, can't recall),
running on the machine with no problems. So I know the system(s) works.
. .
Thoughts anyone? Is there an issue with 5.0 and 3com? I installed on a
machine with an Intel Etherexpress Pro card and the 1/98 version of
RedHat would not find the card, but the 12/97 version did find the card
(after compiling the kernel of course.).
Can anyone shed some light on this? I am stumped after many install
attempts. . .
