I have Red Hat 5.0 installed on a Dell PowerEdge 4200 (up 84 days).
This machine has a 3com Boomerang 100baseT card.

I have always had good luck with 3com being found while the boot proboes
for devices. I was surprised when the installation did not find the
card. I started trying a mess of things.have installed about 15 times
over the last 2 days. . . I finally strted to compile the kernel to see
if I could find the card. As mentioned, when I started an installation
and told it I wanted to do an NFS install, the install found the card
fine. This is why I am stumped. No matter what I do, I cannot let the
installation find it, or compile the kernel and find it, leave it as a
module and find it, all that. . .

Well, I am not sure if I have misconfigured the kernel. . . all I know
is I have installed RH on approximately 110 machines, at least 10
different types, and think I know it somewhat. That's why I am
surprised it is not finding the card, and I have added 3 separate types
of cards as eth1, thinking the install will find at least those. This
on 3 separate but same type of machines. . . I was also quite surprised
when I installed on a different machine (Intel EtherExpress Pro) and a
RH disk cut in 1/98 did not find the card, even after I compiled support
for it (I had previously created a workshop where we installed 72
machines exactly the same way on a RH CD cut in 12/97. . . both labled
RH 5.0 but different dates)).

So I am stumped. . . any other thoughts?? I don't know why the
installation will find the card during an NFS install, but nno matter
what I do, I cannot get it to find the card on a CDROM install.

tx for your comments. . .
