Sun publishes the specifications to everything related to Java. Therefore,
the only thing proprietary about Java is the Java trademark and Sun's (or
anyone else's) source code. The part of Java that can be removed from Java
is the Java language. You could do Java in any language that would create
valid byte code and conform to the Java APIs. I would suspect that most of
JOS as well as all of the current Java Virtual  Machines are being developed
in C/C++ and assembly language.
