I have been up against this problem.
"OIf you need to communicate via docs with the outside world then you need Win95
and latest Word"
Granted there is SO4 but it is not stable and has bugs, then there is Applix,
good , but forget accurate filters for embedded graphics and accurate formatting,
then there is Maxwell and its Word filters are not implemented yet.
So I have to run MS to maintain compatibility.
Hate it , but no other solution
