To which could be added the note that some switches provide a separate
port for connecting to another switch without a crossover cable. These
ports are marked appropriately. We use SMC Fast Ethernet switches,
which offer this convenience. We've also found that some of them make
an eerie moaning whistle that sounds just like the howl of the wind in
a bad horror movie. Seems that one of the cooling fans generates a
peculiar aerodynamic flow pattern characterized by an acoustical
signature that will actually carry through a closed office door. SMC
has thus far been unable to figure out how to address this problem,
other than to thrash madly about in confusion.
