Then it will be wired wrong.  If the cable trails to the left, with the
pins on the right, then pin 1 will be the farthest away and pin 8 closest
to you.

I just pulled an Anixter cable catalog and the pin 1 location is as I
described.  Another way to look at it is to visualize a RJ45 wall plate,
tab down.  Pin 1 is to the left.  Now plug in the RJ45 connector and you
can see where pin 1 is.

BTW, if you hold the cable as you describe, you pretty much block the
connector :-)
