Dear Lister:

I am not sure which list I should put this mail.

Actually I have some question about the old Red Hat 5.2. I installed
RH5.2 last year and had run it for a year. Recently I modified some
crontab files (which is probably the causes for my problem) since I
don't want the system to remove the temp files automatically, because I
run a big job needed at least one month. However, during that job
running, the x-window crashed although the job and the system was still
on.

Once the job finished, I reboot the computer (P2 300 with 128M RAM).
However, I can't get the computer start.

Boot from harddisk, the final following error appeared:

Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount the root fs on 03:05

If I boot from rescue mode, the following error appeared:

Unable to open the initial console.

So I want to reinstall the RH5.2 without reformat the hard disk, is it
possible? Since I have lots of important data on this hard disk.
Although I have RH 6.0, I still want to keep RH5.2.

Thanks a lot for any hints!

 Best regards,
