Exactly how did you fix the problem you had with shadow and
/etc/passwords? It sounds like you replaced something you probably
shouldn't have. /etc/login.defs belongs to the rpm "shadow-utils",
which you should verify. (rpm -V shadow-utils)
If any files other than the configuration files come up with checksum
errors or mod time errors, then re-install the shadow-utils package.
