You probably ought to find out from your provider some more info.
There are several different protocols being used. The most common is
DHCP/ethernet based. But there is a trend to PPPoE and PPPoA, both of
which would be much more trouble for you.

Assuming it is DHCP, and you get an external 'modem' (watch out for
USB externals), just get the NIC recognized and start dhcpcd.
