Amber,

First, there are a few points to remember.

1)  A USR 56k V90 modem != a USR 56k V90 modem.  Some work fine in Linux.
Others
don't work at all in Linux, because of the fact that some hardware functions
are
offloaded and performed as software by the host system. That unfortunately
means
that those modems are bound by the software that performs that act, though.
If
the coders wrote a version for Windows, but not for Linux, it will only run
in
Windows. If the coders wrote versions for both, it'll run in both (and yes,
there are LinuxModems out there that only run in Linux... with that driver.
They did make a WinModem driver for it, too). The entire class of Software
modems are named after the first type of modem to have them, USRs Winmodems,
and so the are called Winmodems.

2) If you get a NON-Winmodem modem, it WILL work with Linux, I would just
about
guarantee. Might have some idiosyncrasies to work out, but it'll work.

3) Even if you get a Winmodem, don't let everyone (including me) who tells
you
you can't use it in Linux discourage you... because the dirty little secret
is
there are at least three, and probably a number of other, ways that you CAN
use
a Winmodem to connect a Linux box to the Internet... and we aren't talking
dual
booted machines booted in Windows, though you can do that too. It just
takes
a bit of ingenuity and thought (and for one, a home network setup). You
can,
for example, use VMWARE to use the modem. You can also (potentially, though
I make no bones that I've not tried it yet) use WINE to connect the modem.
Or you can get sneaky, move the modem to another box running Windows 98,
and use the Internet Connection Sharing setup in Windows to allow the
Linux box to use the modem's Internet connection over the network.

Subject: hmmm....

I have a question concerning Linux and USR 56k V90 modems. Now I have
heard a lot of people say. When it comes to that modem trash it, it's a PnP
modem and you're screwed. There's no way in hell it will work in Linux.

On the juxta-position of that I have seen multiple posts in various NG and
other places in which people say I have done that and it has been done, can
be done.

Several computer shops locally that I have talked to say, umm yeah we do
it every day, but that's a shop secret. Pay us $65.00 and we can do it. I
am like ummm Bull S*** I don't think so. I am sure someone can help me
concerning this issue.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Amber N. Ferguson
