Rename the old ones BEFORE shifting in the new ones. There's a chance if
you're building the exact same kernel number that what you're going to
shift in has exactly the same name. It's very slim but it's best to get
used to doing things safely before you find out you've stuffed up.

So, Mark Basil's advice is consistent, fair and correct but for peace of
mind, go into your /boot directory and rename the current kernel and
System.map FIRST.

It's good sense to copy (cp) lilo.conf to lilo.conf.bak before adjusting
it too.
