Thanks for all the replies.  The answer was indeed in the X commands.  X2 will
tell the modem to ignore the busy signals and keep on trucking.  Not sure what
happens if the damn thing is busy but that is for another day.  It should not
be an issue in the field anyway.

Now if I can just find out why ifdown ppp0 does not bring the link down I will
be jammin'.  Hi ho, hi ho, its off to the archives I go :-)
