I guess you are trying to start a flame war :)

I can't really speak to the internals, but I can speak to the "why".

Most people that I know that run Solaris/Intel do so because they work on
Solaris/Sparc at work and want the same development environment. It does
have a few nice features. It tends not to bog down shells when it is i/o
heavy, whereas Linux will let disk i/o almost take the machine over. It is,
with obvious exceptions having to do with hardware, EXACTLY the same system
as Solaris/Sparc. I use a Solaris/Intel here for cross development on
projects that I want to run on both Linux and Solaris because Solaris is
still the "acceptable" *nix in the business world.

The bad part: Hardware support. Solaris supports what it supports and
nothing more. Linux tends to get device driver support for fun toys shortly
after they are released. Do not expect this with Solaris. I would advise
always checking the Sun website and making sure your device is listed as
being 100% compliant. Also make sure the model numbers match exactly.

Also remember that with Solaris you get an o/s. No development tools, no
toys. You have to get those yourself. There are good sites to get binaries
for a lot of the GNU tools. From there you can compile a lot of the other
things you are used to.

Subject: solaris or linux

I've ask this in the SPARC list, but as the discussion could have taken
place
here, I'll ask:

How does Solaris work internally, and why should I think that Linux is
better
(on SPARC or INTEL).

Thanks
