I had RH 6.2 installed and running beautifully. This machine had two
adapters, a NetGear FA310TX and Linksys LNE100, for firewalling, gatewaying,
masqing the rest of my LAN on my broadband connection. Well, after the last
kernel RPM form RH, it stopped masqing FTPs because the ipv4 mods were "not
of the current kernel version". Ok, so I figure this is a nice opportunity
to upgrade to RH7.0 since I have it installed on two other machines and has
been working great. That way I get the newer kernel, update the system
files and the right ipv4 mods all in the same package. Wrong...
Now the drivers I was using for 6.2 (kernel 2.2.16-3) are now crap in the RH
7.0 kernel (2.2.16-20?). I could only find source for one (the Linksys) to
recompile it. It works fine, except I keep getting this cryptic error every
time I try to assign it (eth1 or eth0) to the local 192.168. network:
"SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable". What does that mean? No pings,
connects - nothing. ifconfig shows it as being there, though. Cabling is
correct.
The NetGear card just refuses to operate, though it ran beautifully under
the anaconda FTP install (that machine has no CD drive) using the tulip.o
driver.
I also tried replacing both the Netgear, then the Linksys with another
Linksys product, the Network Everywhere NC100. It, too, is a tulip.o card
that refused to work. Similar probs to the other linksys card.
So, finally, my question is: How do I get these tulip-based cards to work on
the same machine? Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Drew

Here are the specific circumstances to each card.
Linksys LNE100:
- drivers recompiled A-OK
- doesn't complain when assigned to outside world IP (no ping, however)
- gives "SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable" error when assigned to internal
IP
- runs fine when other card removed
- uses a Linksys-modified tulip driver with another module (pci-scan.o)
Netgear FA310TX:
- 6.2 used Netgear-modified tulip driver
- Netgear drivers refused recompile
- downloaded drivers refused compile
- runs OK with generic tulip.o module with other card removed
- won't run with other card installed, ifup or ifdown
- ran fine under anaconda with other card in machine
- registers in KUDZU as a LNE100, not Netgear or tulip device
Network Everywhere NC100:
- supposedly uses generic tulip.o driver that comes with the kernel
- got it to bind to the right module, just wouldn't work
- similar probs to the linksys and got the weird "SIOCADDRT: Network is
unreachable" error
- did not try as standalone, assuming similar results
