I'm afraid I may be too late to the discussion, but... here are my two cents.

I don't know much about the LPI cert, but I did take and pass the RHCE tests
myself.  From what I heard about the LPI, they _may_ be based solely on
multiple choice tests, while I can guarantee that the RHCE tests make you
sweat.  Sure the RHCE still doesn't prove that you're a Linux guru (I'm
certainly no Linux guru... yet), but at least one has to work quite a bit to
pass.

The RHCE tests consist of three parts: a multiple choice type of test,
a troubleshooting session where one has to fix what the Red Hat examiner
broke, and an installation session where one has to proceed to install the
OS in a certain way (such and such accounts, anonymous FTP, and whatever
else).  Again, the RHCE may not prove that you're a genius, but one cannot
certainly pass the tests unless he/she is quite familiar qith the OS.
