What kind of job? What do you want to do? Do you want a "Linux" job or
an IT job or a CS job? Do you want to be an admin, a programmer, a
designer, or just use Linux as a tool to get work done?

I'm a big advocate of learning by breaking, er, doing. Pick up a cheap,
obsolete PC or two (or more...), some networking equipment, and have at
it. Use Linux (or any other Free OS, or better yet more than one) to
get something done, even if it's something silly. Play.

I haven't been to a lot of IT training programs, and none that were
Linux-specific, but the experiences I have had suggest that training is
usually a waste of time and (much) money. Books are nice if you know
what you want to learn or if you need a handy reference, OR if you have
a hard time accessing online resources. Books and classes can also be
good if you need deep knowledge in some specific area. But when it
comes to covering "LINUX", an arena so wide and varied that I doubt we
could even get a universal concensus on what it includes and what it
doesn't (do I need to know about 'real' Unix to be considered a Linux
expert? what about kernel internals? etc...), I believe that the only
sensible approach is to figure out what you want "Linux" to do for you
and set about doing it.

Along the way you'll read man pages, HOWTO's, web sites, more man pages,
mailing lists (this one and others), more man pages, and lots of
README's and their ilk. You'll "break" your system, and when you do you
should jump for joy, because that's when you really get to learn what's
going on as you tear it up and fix it. Don't be too quick to apply the
Windows Solution ("reboot, reboot again, if that doesn't work reinsall
the OS").
