All platforms have problems. I work primarily with Microsoft, Sun,
and Red Hat. And I can tell you that of the three, the only vendor
who, to date, has no unpatched known security problems is Red Hat
(except ntpd, but give 'em a break, it's only been 48 hours, and
there's no known remote root). I'd call that pretty responsive.
I'm all for being objective. It's quite true that Red Hat has done
some things which destabilized the distribution. It's also true that
to reach the masses, you have to push the envelope and try to compete
on features. The tightest, most secure, and (in my opinion) easiest
OS to manage is OpenBSD ... but you're not going to convert any
Windows users with OpenBSD. I understand the tradeoffs, and I'm very
glad that Red Hat has helped to reach people who've never known
anything but Microsoft. That in no way reduces the choices available
to the rest of us.
That said, I've had no serious trouble with 7.0. My biggest beef is
the glibc updates; breaking out glibc-common from the base package
meant that my automated rpm -F scripts failed. I can fix that,
though, and I can fix it *once* in a single script for an unlimited
number of hosts ... compare that to having to (in most cases)
physically touch each of our Windows workstations to apply every
damned patch and service pack.
I've been in your shoes, having a really weird problem that no one
else has ever seen before, and you know what? If it's just me ...
it's usually my fault. So I keep reading. Right now, it sounds like
you're just frustrated because you're inexperienced. We're here to
help, but we can't help you when you spew unproductive aspersions.
